TRP For Educational Purposes

A Temporary Residence Permit for Educational Purposes (TRP), or simply a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) for educational purposes, is a wonderful opportunity available to international students studying in Russia, allowing them to study and work legally in the country.

Full-time international students can obtain an TRP if they are enrolled at a state university.

  • The RVP entitles international students to enter and leave the country without having to register.
  • The RVP entitles international students to work legally within the region where they are studying.
  • The RVP entitles international students to receive a visa for the entire duration of their studies plus an additional half year.
  • The Temporary Residence Permit entitles the holder to apply for a Residence Permit (VNZH) after graduation.
  • The Temporary Residence Permit entitles the holder to receive free medical care and a compulsory medical insurance policy.

Any full-time international student enrolled at a public higher education institution and pursuing a bachelor’s, specialist, master’s, residency, or doctoral degree—or participating in an assistantship or internship program—is eligible to obtain a Regional Temporary Residence Permit (RTP).

Like a standard Temporary Residence Permit, the Student Temporary Residence Permit is valid only in the region where it was issued. For example, if the Student Temporary Residence Permit was issued in the Moscow Region, you will not be able to work in Moscow under its terms. Additionally, students who have obtained this status should be aware of the risk of administrative fines. If a student accumulates two fines, the RVP will be revoked. Before receiving an RVP, a foreign student is required to undergo a medical examination for infectious diseases and illicit substances. If any such conditions are found, the RVP will not be issued. As described above, a foreign student holding an RVP has the right to work, but only in the region where the RVP was issued. An employment contract under a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) may not exceed the validity period of the TRP.

The standard documents required to obtain a Temporary Residence Permit for Students are the same as those for a regular Temporary Residence Permit; however, since the basis for the permit is enrollment in a university, the student must provide documents from the university proving their student status. In 2026, the requirements for university documents changed; a specific form is now required, containing all necessary information. You can request a sample of this form from our company.

If you are a student at a Russian university or are planning to become one, wish to obtain a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) for a more comfortable stay in Russia, or are facing issues with being expelled from the university, our company provides legal services for students, prepares the documentation package for a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) and a Residence Permit, including translations and notarizations, and our representative will accompany you to the migration service or represent your interests before other government agencies, if necessary. Please call us with any questions.
